Fairy Gardens

When my sister and I were younger we would, every now and then, collect a basketful of flowers (these were always a favourite), leaves and other pretty bits and pieces from our back garden and make a fairy garden.  We arranged these carefully collected items in a circle on the concrete around the barbeque area in the back corner of our garden.

We'd also make the fairy gardens when we stayed at our Grandparents house up the coast.  They had a breezeway down the side of their house that had a whole lot of hanging plants in it and to me, at the time, it seemed like a lush green secret garden.  Now it just looks like a concrete path beside their house with a few pot plants lining the side.

After we had finished making our fairy garden, we'd go away for a little while and then on our return, by some strange fairy magic there was always 20c sitting in the garden for us to collect.  Generally we'd take this 20c and walk to the shops at the bottom of our street and spend it on lollies.

The fairy magic didn't work all the time, you had to make sure you only made a garden every now and then or the fairies wouldn't come.

The other day, walking around my mum and dad's garden my sister and I introduced Matilda, Polly and Emilia to the concept.  They, of course, loved it.

First we collected the flowers.

Then we arranged.  Matilda wanted to cover the whole area in leaves first, so we ran back into the garden to get a few more branches.

Finally we sat back and admired our handy work.  Complete with coloured and glittered ponds for the fairies to swim in.

The girls ran off to play and a little while later they came back to show Granny their beautiful creation.  To their amazement the fairies had been and left behind a little surprise for Matilda and Polly.  There's been some pretty decent inflation in fairy land since I was a kid.

oh the fairies have been!

These fairies must have been pretty smart because they knew that in the not too distant future we're off on a family holiday to Hawaii (!!), so they bought pocket money for the girls to spend there.  Clever fairies.
